Ingredients

- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup shortening
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons nutmeg
- 3 1/2 cups flour
- 24 currants or 24 raisins
- 1 egg, beaten
- 24 jelly beans
Recipe
- 1 dissolve yeast in warm water.
- 2 add eggs, shortening, sugar, salt, nutmeg and 1 3/4 c flour and beat 2 minutes on medium speed, scraping bowl frequently.
- 3 mix enough remaining flour to make dough smooth, scraping sides well.
- 4 cover and let rise in warm place until double (about 45 minutes).
- 5 punch down dough and turn onto lightly floured board.
- 6 divide dough into 24 equal parts. shape 12 parts into plump ovals about 4 inches long - this will be the bodies.
- 7 with slightly more than half of each of the remaining parts shape 12 balls for the heads.
- 8 with the remaining parts shape 12 4 inch ropes, and cut into half for arms.
- 9 assemble figures and place about 3 inches apart on greased cookie sheet. press currants or raisins into heads for the eyes.
- 10 let rise again until double (about 45 minutes)
- 11 heat oven to 350.
- 12 brush rolls lightly with beaten egg.
- 13 bake 15 minutes or until golden.
- 14 for antenna: insert toothpick for antenna and top with a jelly bean.
